A Permanent Resting Place for Mankind's Most Loyal Friends

  The Rainbow Bridge Pet Cemetery is a peaceful resting place for your pet, as well as sanctuary for area wildlife. Situated at Desert Haven Animal Refuge, two miles south of Williamsburg, NM on Highway 187 (old 85), the pet cemetery gives a commanding view of the Caballo mountain range.  An assortment  of birds, horned toads, rabbits, lizards, butterflies and quail live there.  Bald eagles can be seen often, soaring across the blue skies along the Rio Grande corridor nearby.

Drought tolerant plants and trees are being planted and cultivated to improve the landscape for visitors and the environment for wildlife.  A large number of native plants can be found within the boundaries, from the beautiful desert willows to the globe mallow and desert marigold.  No herbicides or pesticides are being used to tend the graves, and constant efforts are made to keep the weeds to a minimum. For those with a green thumb, volunteers are needed on a continuous basis for occasional weeding get-togethers, which take place on Tuesday.

Donations of drought tolerant plants, wind chimes, bird feeders and seeds, bird baths and nesting boxes are always welcome.  They can be dropped off at Desert Haven, or call Eliana at 505-894-1937 for pick-up (local area only, of course).

  We offer a choice of two distinct sections:

The Old West Section, each grave marked by a mound of river stones, just as in the old days.

The Classic section, each grave marked by a scalloped red brick boarder, with gravel interior.

  Burials take place once a week, and are handled by Humane Society volunteers. Arrangements can be made in advance for pet owners who would like to attend their pet's burial.

Free storage is available until burial takes place, not to exceed 10 days.

Temporary markers are placed on each grave and will remain up to six months, to give the pet owners ample time to purchase the grave marker of choice.

Arrangements can also be made in advance, to reserve a grave plot for future needs.

A cancellation of a plot reservation can be made up to six months of purchase.  Cost of grave site will be refunded, minus a processing charge of 25%.

A Prayer For The Animals

Hear our humble prayer, oh, God,
Especially for animals who are suffering;
For any that are haunted or lost or deserted
Or frightened or hungry;
For all that must be put to death.
We entreat for them all Thy mercy and pity,
And for those who deal with them
We ask a heart of compassion
And gentle hands and kindly words.
Make us, ourselves
To be true friends to animals
And so to share the blessings
Of the merciful.
